Dealing with cravings? Effective strategies to manage them!
Cravings can be challenging to navigate, but there are several effective strategies you can employ to handle them. Experiencing cravings (urges) when reducing or quitting drinking or using drugs is a normal part of the process.
Here are some helpful tips on how to handle cravings, including strategies for planning ahead and distracting yourself during their occurrence.
You can overcome cravings:
Trying to suppress cravings by telling yourself they’re wrong or that you shouldn’t be experiencing them may lead to feelings of shame and disappointment.
It’s more beneficial to acknowledge that cravings are a natural aspect of cutting down or giving something up.
While the thoughts and feelings associated with cravings may seem overwhelming, it is possible to navigate through them successfully.
Managing cravings: Overcoming them successfully
Cravings are temporary:
Cravings typically last for an hour or less, and sometimes they only endure for a few minutes. Visualize them as a wave that builds up, reaches its peak, and then subsides.
Distract yourself until they pass:
The key is not to succumb to cravings. Instead, devise strategies to distract yourself when they arise. You might choose to take a walk, listen to music, brew a cup of tea, or engage in a puzzle – whatever helps you.
It gets easier:
Resisting the current craving makes facing the next one easier. With each successfully managed craving, your confidence grows. You can begin to challenge any beliefs you may hold about cravings being stronger than your willpower.
Be patient with yourself:
Becoming more confident in coping with cravings won’t happen overnight. Changing and breaking an old habit takes time. However, resisting the urge to act on cravings will become progressively easier over time.
