I’m concerned about my sweat smelling like cannabis
In recent times, illegal cannabis has become more accessible in the UK and Ireland, reigniting my passion for smoking it.
Whether it’s before catching a movie, tackling a deep clean at home, rewarding myself after a week of workouts, or simply unwinding after work, I find myself indulging more frequently.
However, along with my revived interest in smoking weed, I’ve stumbled upon an unexpected issue: the scent of weed permeating my body odor.
While my post-gym aroma usually resembles a mixture of damp socks and bleu cheese, several weeks ago, I detected a distinct weed smell that couldn’t be ignored.
Scientific research largely supports my olfactory observations
Just like alcohol consumption, smoking weed does influence body odor. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not the sweat itself causing the aroma, but rather the microorganisms thriving on our skin, collectively known as the skin microbiome, that metabolize sweat into odorous byproducts.
Since the composition of our skin microbiome is influenced by our diet and lifestyle choices, it’s logical to assume that weed consumption can alter body odor.
According to Julie Horvath, an expert in evolutionary genomics, substances ingested can manifest in various bodily processes, including sweat production and scent.
Studies have demonstrated that exposure to smoke-filled environments can impact one’s microbiome and body odor. Moreover, research from 2014 indicates that cannabis consumption leaves a discernible trace in body odor.
Some experts speculate that individuals who exercise regularly may experience a more potent weed body odor effect.
Justin Fischedick, a biochemistry researcher, suggests that the fat-soluble compounds in marijuana, including THC, may be released during exercise as they are stored in fat cells.
In essence, the evidence is clear: weed can intensify body odor.
